Delhi University (DU) may not have come true for many of its aspirants, but you may still become a part of the university. DU’s School of Open Learning offers five undergraduate courses for and all those who secured 40% or above in their class 12 examination are eligible for admission.

The undergraduate courses offered are BA (honours) political science, BA (honours) English, B.Com. programme and B.Com. (honours) and BA programme. All are distance-learning programmes. The course which received the maximum number of application is for B.Com programme and B.Com. (honours)

More than one lakh forms has already been sold by the School of Open Learning (SOL) so far. The fifth and the last cut-off list of the regular colleges at DU, which was declared on Friday, did not give many options to general category students. Admission was closed in almost all courses in nearly all colleges. And this one factor which may result in a rise in the number of applications the SOL will receive.

Moreover, SOL is not just for those who didn’t score as well as the others. It is also for those students who want to work while they study. Also the lower fee and the flexibility make this school a viable option.

The sale of forms for undergraduate courses began on June 1. But it usually picks up speed after the last cut-off list in regular colleges is declared. Last year, the number of students took admission in the school were around 1.2 lakh.

The last date for the sale and submission of forms is August 1 without late fee. Those who miss out on this can furnish a late fee of R200 and apply till September 30.

The prospectus for undergraduate courses can be bought at the SOL North Campus and its South Study Centre at old Moti Lal Nehru College Building, South Moti Bagh, Nanak Pura.

The history of inculcating formal technical education in India started in the 19th century although it got momentum in 20th century with the onset of Constitution of Technical Education Committee of Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE). After India achieved Independence in the year 1947, the head-start of technical education emerged as a major concern for the Indian Government in order to face upcoming challenges and bring the country ahead.

The Army Welfare Education Society is inviting applications for admission into its MBA programmes 2011-2013 at the Army Institute of Management Kolkata (AIMK) and the Institute of Management and Technology, Greater Noida (AIMT).

Candidates with a three year Bachelor’s Degree in any discipline with 50% marks recognized by the Association of Indian Universities or candidates appearing in Bachelor’s Degree in 2011 are eligible to apply for admission.

For admission to AIMK, candidates can obtain the prospectus and application form by post by sending a DD of Rs 800/- for Army wards & Rs 900/- for General candidates (includes Rs 50 postal charges), drawn in favor of “Director – AIM” payable at Kolkata (or by hand DD of Re 750/- for Army wards and Rs 850/ for General candidates).

An Entrance Examination is an Examination which is conducted by various Educational Institutions to select students for admission in various College or Universities. These Examinations can be administered at any level of education, though these are conducted at higher level of education. Entrance Examinations are the Testing Grounds for any Student to evaluate one’s abilities and capabilities in relation to the Admission into an Institution he/she has chosen and in relation to one’s chosen Academic Stream. Most of the Entrance Examination are conducted by Elite Institutes. These Institutes are known for their Superior Result oriented, cream of Faculty and Candidates and as such have gained a lot of Reputation. Most of the Popular Entrance Examinations in India are AIEEE, JEE, CLAT, MBBS, BDS to name a few. Indian Entrance Examinations are widespread with just about most of the Institutes conducting their own separate Entrance Examinations on the same basis as of National Entrance Examinations. Some of the Entrance Examinations like the IIT-JEE, CAT and AIPMT are considered among the toughest in the world, with JEE having a success rate of around 1 in 45. Over the year these Examinations have gained high importance, have become very topical, important and in the process has garnered controversies which have affected students, parents and the administrators.

History of Indian Entrance Examinations

Entrance Examinations emerged with establishment of the University of Calcutta in 1857. The University introduced the Entrance Examination, primarily to decide as to who was eligible for admission to the University. The Examination attained the Status of a School Leaving Examination. Subsequently, the name was changed to Matriculation. After independence of India in 1947, the Examination System was further revised: the Secondary Examination after class X was called the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) exam and the examination after class XII was called Higher Secondary Examination (HSC). However the Modern Entrance Examinations of Today owe their existence to the various IIT’s (Indian Institute of Technology) set up during the 1950’s. It was the IITs which introduced the All-India Joint Entrance Examinations (JEE) for their admissions. The logic behind introducing these as formal procedure was that varied marks of different school boards could not be used to create a common merit list. Since the inception of JEE, various Indian States followed the pattern and started Entrance Tests for admission in respective states. Soon the Central Board of Secondary Education started PMT (Pre Medical Test) for select medical colleges in the country and the All India Entrance Exam'>Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE) for admission to National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and also for any engineering institution which may opt for it.

Entrance Examinations held in India

* Most of the Government and Private Educational Institutes conduct Entrance Examinations for various professional courses. These Entrance Examinations are basically Multiple Choice Question Papers or more popularly known as MCQ’s in the Academic Lingo. This Pattern was introduced as it was considered that scores obtained by school students are based on conventional, long-answer papers which might not represent the actual potential of a student. The reason being given that these scores can represent a Human Examiner’s Errors and as such these would be unacceptable in a closely competitive environment where even a mark or two could affect a student’s career. This subjectivity was eliminated with the introduction of a Special Examiner. It is known as OMR (Optical Mark Recognition) reading Laser which was introduced in 2006.

* Usually Engineering Institutes in India admit 15% of their students through the national-level AIEEE and the remaining 85% based on their scores in the entrance exam conducted by the state in which the college is located.

* Government Medical Institutes follow the same procedure, basing admissions on the candidate’s rank at the All India Pre-Medical Test.

* Indian Institutes of Management conducts a Common Admission Test for the candidates.

* Indian Institutes of Technology conducts IIT-JEE.

* Cases of Psychological illness over the years has increased amongst the youth of today. They have to deal with so much these days like going to school, doing homework, preparing for weekly or monthly tests, going for extra Coaching for weak subjects and so on. In such an environment there is no scope for sports, health activities or simply fun based activities. As such the physical health also suffers in the form of various ailments.

The Union government plans to introduce a single national-level entrance exam for students from all streams for entry into higher education from 2013, on the lines of the Scholastic Aptitude Test in the US.

Kapil Sibal Union human resource development minister Kapil Sibal said a ‘task force’ on how to go about this will be named in a month. Terming the decision a “historic” one, he said it would have two years to decide how to structure the said exam, including how much weightage to give the school-leaving examination.

“The idea is that there will be a single entrance exam for each stream,” Sibal said in a speech at a meeting here of the Council of Boards of School Education in India (COBSE). The meeting had representatives from 20 different school boards.

The recommendation to have a single entrance test for higher studies had been made by the Yash Pal committee on ‘Renovation and Rejuvenation of Higher Education’.

The idea, said Sibal, is “to have a level-playing field and reduce the burden on students who are appearing for multiple tests to get into these disciplines”.

1. Test Dates: Check the dates regularly so that you can prepare accordingly and give adequate time to each subject.

2.Self Belief: You should believe in yourself and your abilities. You should believe that you belong to the competitive arena and you can clear these exams if you can perform to best of your abilities. Belief is everything and everything can be achieved through belief. There is a famous quote: “The thing always happens that you really believe in; and the belief in a thing makes it happen”.

3. Knowledge: Knowledge is a necessary element to clear these exams. You should have proper knowledge about your concepts. We don’t have to acquire extra knowledge, as conceptual knowledge is needed for competitive tests. We can prefect our conceptual knowledge by practicing questions based on these concepts.

4. Time Management and Data: We have to study minimum of 4 hours a day for competitive exams. We can manage this time by preparing timetable for each day. We also have to record weekly data, which ultimately helps in representing our performance graphically. We can take inputs such as time for each subject, part of syllabus completed, time for revision, questions attempted and so on to record data.

5. Sharpness: Sharpness of mind is mandatory for competitive tests. A sharp mind has many advantages such as concept understanding, quick response to a tricky question and speed. Main purpose of these exams is to differentiate sharp-minded students from others. A normal mind can be converted into a sharp mind by regular brain exercises such as puzzles, crosswords. You can also play games such as Chess, which helps in sharpening the mind.

6. Sample Papers: Here comes my last and most important trick. The best way to perform in any test would be to do so many similar types of Sample Papers. With the help of these sample papers, our mind is able to build so many strategies and tricks about particular type of questions, which ultimately helps us during Entrance exams. They have huge advantage as you can feel the mental atmosphere similar to that in competitive exams through these sample papers. Attempting so many sample papers helps in mental coherence during main exams. Sample Papers also helps in achieving a hard, stable concentration during these exams.
