To help the students secure a seat in these courses, various exams are being conducted. The entrance exams are a way to filter the best brains to various colleges in the country. To achieve this end, entrance exams are being conducted on a national basis, and the top ranked candidates are selected to take admissions. Besides the national level centralized tests like the AIPMT and AIEEE, many universities and the states are conducting the exams for the students.

This kind of a national level test to secure seats in the specified colleges has opened up the avenues for students on a national platform. Since, such exams are conducted by the elite institutions, the students are not missing out on the opportunity to read in a particular state even though they do not belong to the state. MHT CET exam is one such well known exam that is conducted by the Maharashtra government for the technical colleges in the state. Through this exam, students from all over the country get a chance at securing ranks and getting admission into the engineering and medical courses in Maharashtra.

If MHT CET is a state level exam that favours a national admission, then the BITSAT 2012 would be an exam for a specific university. Through this exam of BITSAT, students interested in technological courses in one of the India’s premier universities can get admission in Birla Institute of Technology campuses in Pilani, Goa and Hyderabad campuses.

With a recognition that goes across the boundaries of the campus, these institutes offer the best resources to the students so that it attracts people from all parts of India to fulfill their dreams of pursuing engineering in India’s top universities. Such kinds of common entrances are also found in the technological field in the form of GATE exams where the students can go for master’s degree in various streams and sub streams of engineering.

GATE 2012 would be a perfect opportunity for the engineering undergraduate degree students to carry out their dream of pursuing higher education in their interested subjects. The options for studying in technology courses in India are varied. Keeping a tab on the exam dates and preparing for the exams from a very early period can open the gates to a bright future. Students need to be vigilant enough to get them notified for the dates and sit in the exams and do their best. With top ranks in the results, and admissions into these colleges, people are half scripted their success story.

The government will scrap all engineering entrance exams from 2013-14. It has also come up with a novel idea of hiking tuition fees: students will not feel the pinch during the course of study, but they will have to pay up once they get a job.

Currently, various state boards and institutions, including the IITs, conduct at least 150 entrance exams every year. The government decided to dump all such exams, including the IIT-JEE and the AIEEE, at a meeting of IIT Council (IIT directors) and officials from the ministry of human resource development (HRD). Union HRD minister Kapil Sibal chaired the meeting.

“There will be one merit list. Institutes, including the IITs, will have to pick up students from this list,” Sibal said. “The list will be based on Std 12 marks and the entrance test results. Also, students will be counselled before they choose a course.” This test will be similar to the common entrance exam for medical courses beginning next year.

While rejecting the report of the Anil Kakodkar Committee that had suggested a five-fold fee hike for IITs (BTech and MTech programmes), the government, in principle, approved a fee hike. Sibal said students would continue paying Rs50,000 as annual fee, but they would have to “pay back” the difference money — the fee paid by a student and the money spent on him by an IIT — once they get a job.

Those from the SC/ST and OBC categories and students going for higher education or joining an IIT faculty would be exempted from this policy. The exemption would encourage students to take up research work and meet the faculty shortage, Sibal said.

“At present, the fees are nominal because of government subsidy,” he said. “The actual cost works out to nearly Rs6-8 lakh per student. Students can surely pay back this amount in easy instalments, considering the plush jobs they land with once they get their degrees.”

But the government wants a foolproof system in place to ensure students pay back the difference money. The degrees, which will soon be in a DMAT format, will reflect the difference money as loan and employers will be asked to deduct it from a student’s salary and deposit it with the government.

CLAT was conceptualized and implemented pursuant to a case filed at the Supreme Court of India highlighting the hardships of students who would have to appear for several separate entrance examinations. Prior to the case being decided, the Ministry of Human Resource Development brokered a settlement between the various law schools to conduct a common, all India entrance examination which was labeled as CLAT.

As per the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), the first CLAT Committee (consisting of Vice-Chancellors of the participating NLUs) decided that the test should be conducted by rotation in the order of their establishment. CLAT-2008 (NLSIU, Bangalore), CLAT-2009 (NALSAR, Hyderabad) and CLAT-2010 (NLIU, Bhopal) were conducted accordingly. CLAT 2011 conducted by The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata (WBNUJS).

Eligibility:

To be eligible to appear for CLAT-2011, a candidate should have passed his/her Higher Secondary School/Intermediate Examination (10+2) or its equivalent examination with not less than 50% marks in aggregate (45% in case of SC/ST/OBC and persons with Disability).~ Candidates who have appeared in the 10+2 examination and are awaiting results are also eligible to appear in the test.° Age of candidate should not be more than 20 years in case of General/OBC candidates (22 years in case of SC/ST and persons with Disability).
Pattern of the CLAT Paper for entry to the Under-graduate Programme:

Duration of examination

Two Hours

Logical Reasoning

45 Marks

Legal Aptitude/Legal Awareness

45 Marks

The different subject areas of the exam are explained as under:

1. English including Comprehension

The English section will test the candidate’s proficiency in English based comprehension passages and grammar. In the comprehension section, candidates will be questioned on their understanding of the passage and its central theme, meanings of words used therein etc. The grammar section requires correction of incorrect grammatical sentences, filling in of blanks in sentences with appropriate words, etc.
2. General Knowledge/Current Affairs

This section will only test students on their knowledge of current affairs (broadly defined as matters featuring in the mainstream media between May 2010 and May 2011)
3. Mathematics

This section will test candidates only on “elementary” mathematics i.e. maths that is taught till the class 10.
4. Logical Reasoning

The purpose of the logical reasoning section is to test the student’s ability to identify patterns, logical links and rectify illogical arguments. It will include a wide variety of logical reasoning questions such as syllogisms, logical sequences, analogies, etc. However, visual reasoning will not be tested, as this tends to disadvantage those that are visually impaired.
5.Legal Aptitude/Legal Awareness

Legal Aptitude/Legal Awareness This section will test students only on “legal aptitude”. Questions will be framed with the help of legal propositions (described in the paper), and a set of facts to which the said proposition has to be applied. Some propositions may not be “true” in the real sense (e.g. the legal proposition might be that any person who speaks in a movie hall and disturbs others that are watching the movie will be banned from entering any movie theatre across India for one year). Candidates will have to assume the “truth” of these propositions and answer the question accordingly.

Candidates will not be tested on any prior knowledge of law or legal concepts. If a technical/legal term is used in the question, that term will be explained in the question itself. For example, if the word patent is used, the meaning of patent (“a legal monopoly granted by the government for certain kinds of inventions”) will also be explained.
